Few porta-potties the ladies may not be pleased. Caution, just because the westbound car stopped that’s no guarantee that the eastbound vehicle will be as considerate. On the ones with very light traffic I found that the vehicles would stop and let you pass. Take extra trail mix! There is only one intersection with heavy traffic. I found NO place to buy a drink or snack.

Negatives: Pack an extra water bottle, I had two and rationed it carefully. It is the CLEANEST trail that I’ve ever cycled, I saw only ONE discarded plastic bottle and it was down a ravine. They compliment the natural trail very well. All have distinctive railings made of wood joined by steel cables. The multiple bridges are concrete slabs and a few are wooden. I turned around not because of riding on a public road, after all I ride in Manhattan, but because I would already have 50 miles before I got home. I rode the 23 miles North to the point that the trail turns East along a public road.
#HIGHLAND NY FREE#
A friend suggested a parking place just South of Wassaic Station that is free all the time. I drove the 70 miles from my home in Manhattan, not an easy drive both northbound and return given traffic. All in all a very good addition to the wonderful NY state trail system.

Chatham and then back all the way to the end of the off road section of the trail. From Nassau Lake, my second excursion I rode south to N. The trail veers right, but there are good signs for riders paying attention. There is a small parking area across the road and I thought the trail went up Bunker Hill Rd it does not. When I rode past the cow barns I was overwhelmed by the concentrated odor that was collected at one barn end and forced out the other.) Be careful when going north through the intersection in North Chatham. (Although my first day ride had heavy winds from the west. The southern section of the trail has stunning scenery. The previous comments were all correct in their reviews. The other good place to park is near Nassau Lake, a place I had never heard of previously: 221 County Road 7, Nassau, NY 12123. The best is a huge lot at 1007 Kinderhook St, Kinderhook, NY 12184, across the street from a bagel place and a bicycle shop right on the trail. Twice I had to drive an hour one-way to ride this trail in two separate excursions.
